Sushi has become very popular in America, but a lot of people do not understand it and think it is all just raw fish. That is not the case. There are many different styles of sushi, and several of them are vegetarian or cooked proteins. Here are some ideas that you might want to try if you are heading out for sushi for the first time and don't like the idea of eating raw fish.

Non-Fish Rolls

The best way to avoid the raw fish in sushi is to order something without the fish. The California roll is a good one to start with. It has cucumber, avocado, and cooked crab meat in the roll. It is not vegetarian, but it is free of raw fish. Depending on who made it, the California roll may have a coating of fish roe on the outside, but that is not always the case, and at a lot of places you could order it without the fish roe if you prefer it.

There are rolls with grilled squid or octopus, and anything with shrimp will be cooked. If you do not like seafood, some rolls do not have any fish or shellfish in them at all.

Vegetarian Rolls

Kappa Maki is a great place to start if you want a vegetarian roll. It is a cucumber roll that has no meat in it at all. There are other options as well, so take the time to look over the vegetarian section of the menu to find one you want to try. If nothing else, vegetarian rolls can help you grow more accustomed to the flavors and spices used in the sushi-making process.

Take a Friend with You

If you are unsure about ordering when you get to the restaurant, you could take a friend who is familiar with sushi along with you. You would have someone to help you make some choices and sort out what is good and what you might not care for. Their tastes may be different from yours, but they may let you try some of what they have ordered, so you can try it without ordering an entire roll and then wasting it if you don't like it.

Ask the Chef

When you arrive at the sushi restaurant, ask to sit at the counter where they make the sushi if you can. Most sushi chefs are fine making suggestions or explaining what is in specific rolls for you. Don't be afraid to ask what a roll is and what is in it if it looks good to you.
